In 2009 Muhammad Ali Celebrated His Irish Roots With The Highest Honors Bestowed On Him. He Will Be Missed!

Muhammad Ali’s relatives hailed from the County Clare.  His great grandfather, Abe Grady, came to America in 1862 and married a freed African-American slave.  Their daughter, Odessa Grady, is Muhammed Ali’s mother.  She was born in 1917.  Ali traveled to Ireland to visit the homeland of his great-grandfather on September 1, 2009 and was granted freedom from Ennis, County Clare. This highest civic honor was bestowed upon him by the Ennis Town Council. He was the first man in over 600 years to be given freedom in Ennis.  He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 42, and visited Ireland at 67 years old.  His visit was to help raise money for Parkinson’s research. He returned to Ireland in other visits in later years, but many of County Clare’s residents came to see Muhammad receive this honor.  He will be missed.
