The Claddagh ring has a heart for love, clasped hands for friendship, and a crown for loyalty.  The rings were originally produced in Galway starting in the 1700’s.  There are a few legends as to who actually made the first ring, but one of the oldest surviving rings has the mark of goldsmith Richard Joyce from Galway.  He is said to have given the ring to his wife. The ring has been known to communicate other relationship messages as well.
Worn on the right hand with the crown facing out says the wearer is single and looking for love. 
Worn on the right hand with the crown facing the wrist communicates that the wearer is in a relationship.
Worn on the left hand with the crown facing the fingertips say the wearer is engaged to be married.
Worn on the left hand with the crown facing the wrist tells the wearer is married.
It is a great gift and many mothers have given one to their daughter when they came of age.
